Transportation Impact helps Broad Street Clinic with tech upgrades, renovations

Morehead City, N.C. (April 1, 2014) – Transportation Impact has agreed to donate new computers and office chairs in an effort to aid the Broad Street Clinic, located at 534 N 35th Street in Morehead City.

The clinic was founded in 1993 by county physicians and concerned citizens as a private non-profit, free health clinic serving adult residents of Carteret County and surrounding areas. Its mission is to provide access to medical care for the uninsured, low-income population in the community.

The clinic’s patient population has increased 125 percent during the last four years and currently serves about 900 patients. The clinic receives about 3,000 visits per year and dispenses more than 20,000 prescriptions and provides more than $110,000 worth of hospital services annually. On average, the clinic sees about 10 new patients per week.

“The role that the Broad Street Clinic plays in our community is an important one,” said Transportation Impact co-founder Keith Byrd. “What you have is a group of people that give their time and effort for all the right reasons; to spread goodwill and to give people hope through friendly service.

“Our company has a tremendous amount of respect for the role the clinic plays in the community and we were happy that we were able to help them meet some of their needs.”

Growing demand, limited resources and aging equipment began to present obstacles in keeping up with the clinic’s needs, according to Pharmacy Technician Bernie Whalley. Due to the high number of applications the clinic receives, as well as the amount of prescriptions it fills, he hopes that updated software will enable the clinic’s staff, mostly comprised of volunteers, to keep up with increased demand.

Whalley said that the clinic’s current waiting-room resources are beginning to succumb to wear and tear due to age, and he hopes new office chairs provide an improved and more comfortable patient experience.
