Emerald Isle, N.C. (June 10, 2013) – Two outstanding seniors from Croatan High School have been chosen to receive this year’s Transportation Impact/First Flight Solutions college scholarships.
Madeline McKensie Heverly and Kyle Eugene Hebert, both of Emerald Isle, were the two candidates selected based on excellent academics as well as extracurricular involvement. They were given their awards as part of the Croatan High School Awards Day. Heverly will be receiving a $2,500 scholarship to attend Meredith College in the fall, and Hebert will receive $1,000 towards his tuition at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
“Every year the competition gets harder and harder to choose from,” said Partner and Co-Founder Travis Burt. “But we are positive that we have chosen two dedicated students who will continue to impact their communities even after they leave Emerald Isle.
“The future is in the hands of this generation and we could not be more excited to see what all of the applicants will accomplish. Our company believes that education is a vital resource to forming success, so contributing to the education of our own students in this community is one of our most rewarding luxuries.”
Heverly, daughter of Carl and Deirdre Heverly, has been enrolled in the honors art class at Croatan, and is hoping to pursue an art education or a business degree at Meredith. She was a member of the varsity volleyball and basketball teams where she was chosen to attend the Student-Athlete Summer Institute based on her stellar academic and athletic performance. As a student-athlete, Heverly has also received both honor roll awards and the Carteret-Craven Electric Leadership Award.
An active member of her church’s youth ministry, Heverly helps with children’s church once a month. She was also an election GOP volunteer this past year. When she has some free time, you can find her in the studio, on a surfboard, or talking politics with her friends.
Hebert, son of Randy and Kim Hebert, is also an honor student taking advanced placement and honors courses. His outstanding academics qualified him for admission into the Croatan High School Beta Club, an organization that promotes the ideals of achievement, character, service, and leadership. He is also member of the CHS varsity soccer and swim teams.
Hebert is an active volunteer in the Emerald Isle community. He was a team member, captain, and volunteer for the Emerald Isle ALS Walks in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011. In addition, he has served as a volunteer for the Mayor’s Committee for Disabilities. In his free time, Hebert also enjoys surfing and water activities.
Hebert plans to pursue a career in business, pharmacy, or chemistry at UNC-W.
